FACTS
A Leonard Cohen cover played on the Echo Of Pleasure tour as a Kip solo song to begin or end the encore. Played first in Montreal, Cohen's home city, then in Toronto and sporadically throughout the tour. The song bridges two of Kip's musical projects, as the studio version is by Kip's one-man band, The Natvral. Interestingly, one of the other artists who has covered the song is Tori Amos - her song China received another of Pains' studio cover versions.
QUOTES
Kip to Spotify, 2018: "I grew up in the suburbs with a nice mom who likes Leonard Cohen."
Kip to Radio Citta Del Capo, 2018: "I remember we played it in Toronto earlier this year because Leonard Cohen was from Canada, and he had meant so much to me and my mom, too, who was a big musical influence on me. A lot of people rebel against the music of their parents but my mom always liked things I liked too. Like Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Dylan, kinda this cool 60s and 70s rock and folk tradition that I also really love. So, we went and saw him together when we was very old, but he was amazing and I'm sorry that he passed away but he's such a tremendous artist and such a beautiful, thoughtful human being. It's a good song to be able to play.
TIDAL, 2018: Berman also recorded a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne,” partly for his Cohen-loving mother, and partly because, well, they needed one more song.
“It was almost the opposite of running out of time,” he says. “If you’re not doing all those overdubs and trying to get everything perfect, recording actually goes pretty fast. I wrote them, I played them, and it’s like, ‘Oh shit, we had more time. What else do you know?’”
