Runnin' Down A Dream (Tom Petty Cover)

RELEASED
Full Moon Fever, 2018 (Turntable Kitchen)

NOT PLAYED LIVE

FACTS

One of the songs from Full Moon Fever, covered by Pains on their full-length version of that record. One of the initial singles released from the record, it is available to stream on the Turntable Kitchen website. Most songs from the album are only available digitally on purchasing the vinyl version, at least initially. There is precedent for other Sounds Delicious releases becoming available on streaming services (as with Ben Gibbard's version of Bandwagonesque).

FACTS
One of the songs from Full Moon Fever, covered by Pains on their full-length version of that record. Mentioned by Kip in a Billboard interview as a song produced by Kurt Feldman and featuring Jen Goma on lead vocals.

QUOTES
Kip to Billboard, 2018: "Also, a huge thanks to Kurt Feldman and [vocalist] Jen Goma for totally slaying on ["Free Fallin'"], as well as "Face in the Crowd," which is also on the album. I think I mostly just dida crossword puzzle while those songs were being recorded."

Free Fallin' (Tom Petty cover)

RELEASED
Full Moon Fever, 2018 (Turntable Kitchen)

NOT PLAYED LIVE

FACTS
One of the songs from Full Moon Fever, covered by Pains on their full-length version of that record. Premiered by Billboard magazine as an advance single from the cover album.

QUOTES

Kip to Billboard, 2018: "The original was made at the same time as some of the greatest dream pop and shoegaze records. And it works on similar premises of layering, subdued vocals, repetition, and texture. Lyrics aside, this song wouldn't sound out of place on a Ride album. Obviously, the way Tom Petty did the song was a lot more Americanized, and the production of ELO's Jeff Lynne was rooted more in a sort of minimal, hyper-nuanced, bright production style. But it's really just three chords for about four and a half minutes; the genius of the song is that so much builds and delivers without really anything structurally going on. You could play this song if you played guitar for three weeks, but you couldn't write this song even if you played guitar for 30 years. Some people just have the light and Tom Petty was one of those people."

"In fairness, I think most of the credit for this song has to be given to former Pains drummer Kurt Feldman, who recorded this song with me. His production ideas really transformed this song into something a touch more unmoored, and brought out the more melancholic feelings and strange undercurrents of the song -- ideas I've always heard in the lyrics, but couldn't quite convey in sound without his collaboration."

PLAYED LIVE
2018, 2019, 2021

FACTS
A The Natvral song played at shows in 2018 and 2019, then included on the debut full-length album Tethers in 2021. New Moon became the second single from the album, and shows off a closer style to the unaccompanied pieces on the Know Me More EP, as opposed to the Dylanesque full-band sound of Why Don't You Come Out Anymore?

QOUTES
“A bright, ambitious friend of mine used to date a kind-hearted, but poor musician, at some point, their relationship ended and she went on to marry someone that offered a bit more stability — and asked me to sing a song at their wedding. I gladly sang the song she asked me to, but that experience led me to write another. I didn’t mean to sympathize with her ex — though it’s hard not to. And I didn’t mean to say she chose something wrong for herself, because she’s better suited to her new person. But I just wanted to get at that moment when you know love isn’t going to be enough, and it’s time to say good-bye.” - Kip, in the press release announcing the single

QUOTES
Kip on Bandcamp, 2017: "When I was a teenager, I had a band with the only goal of opening for Dear Nora in the ping pong room at Reed College and maybe getting good enough to play a show at the Magic Marker house. We achieved those goals, and that was it.

We got our name from the label of the shirt I was wearing at the time. Big thanks to Curt Kentner for letting us play at his house. 2017, 2018

FACTS
A Leonard Cohen cover played on the Echo Of Pleasure tour as a Kip solo song to begin or end the encore. Played first in Montreal, Cohen's home city, then in Toronto and sporadically throughout the tour. The song bridges two of Kip's musical projects, as the studio version is by Kip's one-man band, The Natvral. Interestingly, one of the other artists who has covered the song is Tori Amos - her song China received another of Pains' studio cover versions.

QUOTES
Kip to Spotify, 2018: "I grew up in the suburbs with a nice mom who likes Leonard Cohen."

Kip to Radio Citta Del Capo, 2018: "I remember we played it in Toronto earlier this year because Leonard Cohen was from Canada, and he had meant so much to me and my mom, too, who was a big musical influence on me. A lot of people rebel against the music of their parents but my mom always liked things I liked too. Like Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Dylan, kinda this cool 60s and 70s rock and folk tradition that I also really love. So, we went and saw him together when we was very old, but he was amazing and I'm sorry that he passed away but he's such a tremendous artist and such a beautiful, thoughtful human being. It's a good song to be able to play.

TIDAL, 2018: Berman also recorded a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Suzanne,” partly for his Cohen-loving mother, and partly because, well, they needed one more song.

“It was almost the opposite of running out of time,” he says. “If you’re not doing all those overdubs and trying to get everything perfect, recording actually goes pretty fast. I wrote them, I played them, and it’s like, ‘Oh shit, we had more time. What else do you know?’”

The only evidence that the song was played live in 2009 comes from its appearance in the band's Black Session. Since then, however, it has taken on a new life as a solo and acoustic number, often opening encores during the Days Of Abandon and Echo Of Pleasure eras.

The song reappeared yet again as a "cover" after Kip debuted The Natvral. It received its own studio version in a stripped back arrangement and became part of Kip's live sets again, making it unique among Pains material (as of early 2021).
